Another business...

...to which I don't have to give my custom.

A clerk at Circle K successfully defended his life against a robber armed with a pistol and was fired. He apparently was expected to stand there and take a bullet when one robber told her partner to shoot him. That's screwed up by any definition.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Eric Holder

Attorney General Eric Holder blames the increase in officer line of duty deaths to "illegal" guns. The 173 number that Holder touts is all line of duty deaths from heart attack to the car slipped out of gear and ran over the officer standing in front of said car to some bastard shot 'em. Sixty-three of the deaths were from the non-accidental discharge of a firearm. That's four more than in 2010 when at least one of the bastards doing the shooting got the gun from one of Holder's employees. As sorry as I am for the death of any police officer, that's a not even a statistical blip. This Holder blood dance smells of of an anti-gun agenda and bullshit...lots of bullshit.

All the news that fit to spin...

The NYT has taken a swipe at North Carolina CCW holders. Apparently, 2400 out of 240.000 CCW holders here have committed crimes of one sort or another. Here's Sean's rundown on the numbers.
· More than 2,400 permit holders were convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, excluding traffic-related crimes.

· More than 200 were convicted of felonies, including at least 10 who committed murder or manslaughter.

· More than 200 permit holders were also convicted of gun- or weapon-related felonies or misdemeanors, including roughly 60 who committed weapon-related assaults.

· Nearly 900 permit holders were convicted of drunken driving
You be the judge of whether to be concerned that 1% of permit holders committed crimes AFTER obtaining their permits. I'm not. The important number is the 237,600 or 99% who haven't committed any crimes. This story is the NYT pushing Mayor Bloomberg's anti-gun agenda and nothing more. They deserve as much attention as he does: none at all.

Sixty-seven years ago today...

"Nuts"

The man had a way with words.

Eduarto Barreto RIP

I just found out Eduarto Barreto died December 15th. I don't remember the first comic I saw his art in, but I  knew when I saw his name I could count on clean simple pencils and layouts that told a story well.  I  always enjoyed his art and his passing is a damned shame.

Movies

I've been going to movies a bit more than usual this season which apparently makes me unusual since I   understand revenues are down this holiday season. I've seen...

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. I liked Downey's first foray into the world of Sherlock Holmes.  Holmes in drag and the "urban" camouflage was too silly. I did like the broom-handled Mauser.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Easily the best of the four. Good action and amazing stunts. Fast, tense plot. As a rule I go to movies despite the fact Tom Cruise is in it. I don't like him except in this I did.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I liked the Swedish version. I liked Noomi Rapace. This version doesn't do anything the original didn't we just get it with a Hollywood director and Hollywood actors. If you haven't seen the original you might give it a shot.

Now I'm gonna try to get to Tintin and a year from now there's this...

Stage One. Hopefully we'll finish up tomorrow.

Find wall. Apply head.

Yesterday, I took my son to Cary's Winterfest so he could dance with the Little River Cloggers then home to yard work. We piled the leaves in the ditch to burn. I went to the store and the estranged wife put too much gas on the leaves and lit it. The "whoosh" threw debris ten feet into the air and trash into her eye. I return and she goes to the pharmacy to get eye wash. She also gets ear drops and mistakenly flushes her eye with the ear drops. I spent the rest of the evening at the Emergency Room with the estranged wife. As of now her eye hurts but no permanent damage.

Too Damn Bad He Didn't...

A Fayetteville woman who was being sexually assaulted late Wednesday wrestled a gun from her attacker and shot him in the leg, police said.
The woman actually shot the man in the leg and herself in the hand in the struggle for the gun. This was after he raped her. She then made a run for it, and the man tried to shoot her and missed. The police found him at his home with a leg wound. He has been charged with first degree rape. All I can think is it was too damn bad he didn't bleed out before the police found him.

Late to the show

Recently started watching the first series of the BBC's Luther on DVD and I'm damned lucky there are only six episodes a series. I'm sure that cop shows in BBCland bear about as much resemblance to reality as they do here in Hollywoodland, BUT it's pretty interesting stuff and good drama plus there's a nice bluesy title theme by Massive Attack.

Piss off the Mayor of Richmond...

...and get audited.

When the local Tea Party had a rally they paid permit fees and insurance in the amoubt of $10,000. The only people who have paid while the local Occupiers do their thing is the taxpayer. So the local Tea Party asked for their money back and now they are being audited. That strikes me as politics as usual. So here's hoping the Mayor and City Auditor of Richmond learn what it means to live in interesting times and that the Tea Party and their attorneys are successful in making those times interesting.

Now that's funny.

A convenience store clerk in Wilmington, NC shot a robber twice. The robber entered and pulled a pistol. The clerk drew his pistol and fired a warning shot that hit the robber in the leg. The clerk then fired again and hit the robber in the finger. He themn held the schmuck until the police and an ambulance arrived. It all worked out in the end. Bad guy wounded and in custody. Clerk unharmed, but that's sheer luck. and I suspect the hits were as well.

The only excitement was an evening call from the wife asking me to do a Black Friday Target run. A Petition

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Actually take these petitions seriously instead of just using them as an excuse to pretend you are listening
Although the ability to submit petitions directly to the White House is a noble and welcome new feature of the current administration, the first round of responses makes blatantly clear the White House intends to just support its current stances and explain them with responses everyone who has done any research already knows.

An online petition is not meant as a replacement for using a search box in a web browser. We the People, those who grant you the power to govern in the first place, are requesting changes in policy directly, circumventing legislators who already do not listen to us. We the People request you govern FOR us, which means actually listening to us and actually acting in our interests instead of special interests.

You are not above us. You ARE us. Govern accordingly.
Go sign it.

A Poll

Just for the hell of it.

Local Elections

The position of Mayor is up for grabs come November 8th in the City of Durham. Williams Bell and Sylvester Williams are running for the office. I know nothing about "Pastor" Williams' position on the Second Amendment, but William Bell is a member of Mikey Bloomberg's Mayors Against Legal Illegal Guns. His position is obvious.

I live outside the city limits and can't vote in the election. Those of you that are concerned about gun rights and live inside the Durham City limits need to go and vote him out. "Pastor" Williams can't be any worse, and these off year elections have small turn outs. A few votes can make a major difference. Go vote already.

These are also two referendums to raise the sales tax in Durham County. They'll make us the most heavily taxed county in North Carolina. I'm already paying them too damn much and voted no in the early voting. Please go do the same.

He glared stupidly at me with little pig eyes and tried to push his way into the relatively dry elevator. “Hey, you’re bleeding,” he said nasally in American English as he pointed at my robes. “What happened in here?” Not seeing any guards looking in my direction, I grabbed him by the throat, yanked him into the car, broke his nose with a head butt, kneed him hard in the crotch, and then slammed his face repeatedly into the wall. He collapsed in a whimpering heap in the shell casings and broken glass.

Nonchalantly as possible, I stepped into the indoor rain and pushed through the chaos. Carl magically appeared at my side. “Wow, you really kicked Michael Moore’s ass,” he whispered. I turned back briefly. It had kind of looked like him . . . Naw.
The ARC is out now and the paperback release is on September 27th.

UPDATE: Just finished it. Good stuff. I highly recommend it.

Police Shoot Bystanders

San Francisco police officers fired on an armed suspect and miss the suspect but hit bystanders. The suspect was taken into custody unharmed. If the officers knew there were bystanders in the line of fire and fired on the suspect anyway they were negligent as hell. I suspect a lawsuit will follow. On the other hand it may simply be the officers couldn't shoot for shit.

Two hundred and twenty-four years ago today...

...the United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Apocalyptica - Peace

Cello Rock?

Also a Sweet Child of Mine cover.

More fodder for the iPod.

Is it just me or is kinda hard to look like a bad ass when you're toting a cello around?

Your Ghost - Greg Laswell

I was watching the second season of Dollhouse and found this. I think I missed it the first go round. Works best for me with the Dollhouse visuals.

I went to pick up my weekly...

...dose of comic books and was pleasantly surprised to find the first issue of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 9. Whedon is writing the first arc and overseeing those he doesn't write himself. If I can't have more Buffy on TV this will do.

Dark Horse is also giving us the further adventures of Angel and Faith with the first issue of Angel and Faith. Whedon is the 'Executive Producer". In that it's from the same publisher as Buffy I expect good things from it.

And if that's not enough Dark Horse is also continuing the story from Dollhouse. Whedon's brother and sister-in-law are doing the writing chores.

If I can't have new Joss on TV then this will have to do.

Guns I want.

Here's a latest meme via Sean.

1911 - Remington's R1 will do.

M1 Garand - Had one and had to sell it.

Remington 870 Tactical - Had one and had to sell it.

Lee Enfield No. 4 Mk. 4 - I like this version. I want it in .308 rather than .303.

M&P in 9mm and .40 cal.

Probably lots more if I gave it any thought, but those would do.

Reading...

Bye Bye, Baby by Max Allan Collins. It's the latest in the Nathan Heller series, and I've been waiting years for Collins to give us another Heller tale. This time Heller looks into the death of Marilyn Monroe. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Coincidentally, Netflix delivered The Last Lullaby today. It's based on Collins' novel The Last Quarry. The novel is top notch. The plot isn't really that original. A hitman falls for his target. Trouble ensues. But Collins has a way with his material that makes it very readable and enjoyable. It's crime fiction at its best. The movie on the other hand has gotten mixed reviews. I liked the book enough to give it a shot. Again, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Bloomberg has begun a campaign against HR.822...

...the National Reciprocity for Concealed Carry. His argument is State's Rights. Where is your concern for "State's Rights" when you're pushing for, say, a Federal ban on high capacity magazines or another of your favorites, Mikey? Fucking hypocrite. Sebastian has more here.

From the Left Coast...

The California legislature has passed a bill banning open carry of unloaded handguns. All that's required for passage is Governor Brown's signature. He'll sign. It's California.

H/T to Jeff.

There will be blood on the streets...

...or in the dorms or in the ...

Not as a result of concealed carry. Hasn't happened yet despite the screaming and gnashing of teeth by anti-gun twits.

Also, it's a right not a privilege.

Twit.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission...

...is holding public hearings through September 28th on new regulations many of which pertain to handguns. The one of primary interest, H8, would allow...
...individuals who possess a valid concealed handgun permit to carry that handgun on wildlife conservation areas, boating access areas, fishing access areas and game lands, except for these game lands (and any boating or fishing access areas on them) which are exempted at the request of the landowner
John has more detail here. If you can't attend the public hearings you can comment online here.

Strange Tales #138

Jack Kirby did the layouts for the cover but John Severin finished the art. If I had to choose between the two Severin would win every time.

Gunwalker, Fast and Furious, Gangwalker.

All it's ever been about has been justifying gun control.
Likewise, what Codrea has dubbed as “Gangwalker” appears to be another attempt to provide guns to criminals in order to generate more gun crime and then more calls for gun control.

The light at the end of the tunnel...

... turned out to be a bit further away than anticipated. Tile's down and grouted. We'll seal it in a day or so. Father-in-law has fled to points South. Can't say that I blame him.

NASA Issues a Valuable Reminder: ‘Apollo 18′is Not a Documentary
I'm not sure which is worse. That anybody could mistake Apollo 18 for a documentary or NASA would feel the need to remind people that it's not.
