The Short List

Side Trips

My father grew up on a farm that was located in what is now Umpstead State Park outside Raliegh North Carolina. The family cemetery is still there. I was driving down HWY 70 yesterday and had an impulse. I'm glad I did.

My paternal Grandparents and Great Grandparents are there. No one has been buried there since my Aunt Eveline in 1985, and I've not been back since. My Uncle Claude use to take care of it but after he passed no family stepped up.

The Park Rangers did and have done an excellent job taking care of it. Thanks guys.

Seems Appropriate

Will you people stop f$%king around...

And this surprises who?

Blood Dancing in North Carolina

You knew it was going to happen. The Castle Doctrine is under fire in Florida because of the shooting of Trayvon Martin even though it appears it wasn't even a factor in the incident. Now some North Carolina Legislators want to use that tragedy to "revisit" North Carolina's Castle Doctrine. The dogs have simply gotten the scent of blood and are going to do whatever they can to use this opportunity to repeal the recent changes to North Carolina's Castle Doctrine. you know, never let a crisis go to waste. State Rep. Rodney Moore, enjoy your blood dance while you can you worthless piece of trash.

Oh, and how's that new civility working for ya?

The Hunger Games

I noticed The Hunger Games when I saw an article in Entertainment Weekly about the making of the movie. I've seen Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone and X-Men: First Class and like her. That was enough to pick up the first novel. A week and a half later I'd read them all. They are good reads all. So I went to see the movie the other day and was pleased that it stayed closely to the plot of the original novel. the producers apparently saw no need to improve it. If you liked the book you'll like the movie. The cast is good. I'm not sure Donald Sutherland or Woody Harrelson are the actors I've have chosen for their respective roles but that's small stuff.

I've also heard a lot about the implied politics of the novel/movie and I thinks it's like Alan Moore's V for Vendetta in that you can read into it what you want. I lean toward it being an indictment of big government and the MSM, but someone else might say it a right-wing government gone in league with FoxNews gone amok. Who cares? I don't. It's all good stuff. Go see it.

Limbaugh v. Maher

They are both political commentators: Limbaugh for VIB and Maher for HBO. BOTH are entertainers though how entertaining varies from Left to Right. BOTH think they are hilarious while in truth only Rush gets an occasional giggle from me. Oh, and Maher gave one million dollars to an Obama leaning superpac. THAT, Mr. Axlerod, is the only difference that matters to you, so please understand why, when you and you master lecture me on civility, you get only this.

Who's side are you on?

H/T to Theo.

Blood Dancing in Florida

In reference to the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. The quality of the investigation by the Sanford Police Department is in question. Here's a solution. Let the state level law enforcement organization [Florida Department of Law Enforcement] come in and investigate the matter or better yet let the Grand Jury do its job and if you don't like the results then raise hell.

What we shouldn't be doing is letting the mob drive the court's actions, or anti-gun groups looking for a new relevancy use this tragedy to push their anti-gun agenda. Otherwise, this just becomes their standard blood dance and that would be a fucking waste.

Many thanks to Say Uncle for the link...

...and you as well Sean.

Girl, 14, banned from buying Glee stationery because ‘lethal’ pencil sharpener ‘could be used as a weapon’

A spokesman for the national chain of 99p Stores said that they had no such age policy in place regarding pencil sharpeners, but defended the actions of the cashier in question.

He said: 'Pencil sharpeners are not an age restricted product and if we have refused a sale on this occasion we would rather that our staff are over cautious rather than under cautious.'

Another win for the good guys.

The Supreme Court putting the EPA in it's place stikes me as important to our liberty as any Second Amendment win. Must have been an accident.

Monday, March 19, 2012

Of course, this is just anecdotal.

In Kentucky two home invaders kicked in the front door of a home not their own. One charged up the steps to be met by the home owner,a 78 year old man with a shotgun. The gentleman shot one and the other abruptly left the house. I think it fairly evident what would have happened had he not had the shotgun.

Good shooting sir.

Local Store Owner Defends Business

On 16 March 2012 in Durham, North Carolina, a local bad guy decided to break into a convenience store through a hole that had been cut in the roof during an earlier break-in. The store owner was waiting inside, gun in hand. He shot the bad guy who fled. The bad guy was picked up by police and arrested for a multitude of charges including the break-in. There are no plans to charge the store owner at this time.

I'm not sure if the bad guy was armed or not. I'm also not sure I care. The store owner should be congratulated.

Fixed it for you.

I never claimed to have the slightest bit of tact

During a discussion of the manner of a man's death by suicide some years back I was corrected and told he had died in a motorcycle accident. My response...
Only if he was riding an 870.
...and that ended the discussion.

John Carter Rocks

I've already noted that I really enjoyed John Carter. Apparently, I'm not alone in that. Most of the bloggers I follow seem to agree. Professional critics seem to be lukewarm at best and the entertainment professional are already calling it a turkey after only it's first weekend. How can a movie be a turkey or a flop after one weekend? Maybe word of mouth can make a difference. So here's my mouth. John Carter is a great action movie of the old school. It has violence but no profanity or nudity. It's great movie for ages 12 and up. Go see it and tell your friend, and if my words not enough...

Yesterday's drama put us...

...in the Emergency Department sometime around one a.m.. The estranged wife had severe chest pains. Apparently, wasn't her heart, and we were home by 6 a.m., but the remainder of the day has been dealing with the aftermath of the middle daughter's drama and the ED visit. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

As soon as Eric Holder made that claim, the Bossman should have called him in to the Oval Office and asked for his keys. The fact that he didn't speaks volumes.

H/T to Claire.

No comment needed.

H/T to Theo.

I couldn't wait until the weekend.

At 12:01 a.m. I was sitting in the theater waiting for John Carter to begin. A Princess of Mars was one of the books that got me hooked on the written word. It holds a special place in my life. I never really cared about Burroughs' Tarzan books, but the tales of Barsoom were grand and there weren't nearly enough of them. John Carter worked for me. I stopped hoping for movies as good as the books long ago. I'm happy if the film just gets the spirit of the book and characters right. John Carter is close enough to the plot I remember, and it does capture the spirit.

Lawdog, it don't suck. In fact, it's quite good.

Enjoy.

umm...yeah.

No tears here.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich suffers primary defeat in Ohio
I've no idea if his Democrat opponent is any beater on gun rights than he was, but at least he won't be going back to Congress.

Locally, Brad Miller isn't going to run for another term. The NC Legislature redrew the district lines and Miller would have to run against anti-gun Congreeman David Price. He decided not to. One less anti-gun politician to worry about.

It's been too long.

It's old news but I just found in on the web. Max Allan Collins has announced that he and Terry Beatty are working on a new Ms. Tree graphic novel. For those of you who never had the pleasure of reading the original comics, the old ones are being reprinted in trade paperback collections. Ms. Tree is a private detective of the Mike Hammer school and they damn, damn fine comics. Can't fricking wait.

I also noticed that Collins has made a documentary called Caveman: V. T. Hamlin & Alley Oop. I have a couple of the Kitchen Sink alley Oop collections and it's good stuff. It's now at the top of the queue. Again, can't fricking wait.

I should go walkabout on the net more often.

What a f$#ing nitwit.

Mom Says TSA Agent Made Her Pump Breast Milk Before Boarding Plane
I understand the TSA Admin has since apologized. The big problem is the TSA even exists. It's an agency so eager to expand their power with so little demonstrated success in return for the expense to our liberty that we should all be scared of what's to come. I would request that they hire competent employees but then we be well and truly fucked.

John Carter

Definitely going to see this movie this weekend.

Here's a win for the good guys.

Federal judge says gun owners need not provide 'good reason,' rules Maryland law unconstitutional

"A citizen may not be required to offer a 'good and substantial reason' why he should be permitted to exercise his rights," Legg wrote. "The right's existence is all the reason he needs."

Not a whole lot of wiggle room in that statement and lots of other good stuff here. I'm pretty sure that Maryland will appeal. Hopefully, this is a step toward the end of "may issue" in Maryland.

Not surprising at all.

...and the phone rings.

I've gotten two calls on my cell from 966-929-5306 today. A Google search tags the prefix as coming from Saudi Arabia. Unless Capital One has moved their collections center to the Mideast, I have no clue. Thoughts anyone?

Yeah, I know. I could like answer the phone but I don't pick up on unknown numbers and I'm not that curious.

Update: ...and keeps ringing and ringing. At least four more calls today. My curiosity grows.

Glock: The Rise of America's Gun by Paul M. Barrett

This was an interesting book. If the author could have stuck to the history and worked harder at suppressing his anti-gun bias it would have been much better. Still, I couldn't put the damn thing down even when I was muttering under my breath that the author was full of shit.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1

My friend was right. Too many long soulful glances. Not enough plot or action.

'cause in certain Democrat strongholds...

Apples

#3 daughter is allergic to apples and has been since she was an infant. We've always been very careful to check the ingredients in what she eats and drinks and make sure there is no apple in it. That is a pain in that apple is in so much of what we eat. So when the family doc ran an allergy test on #3 the other day and the test came back negative for apples we were very hopeful. With the docs approval we planed a test, brought some gummies made with apple juice, and have spent the last two nights in the local ER. She is still allergic to apples. Thankfully, the symptoms were mild and she's gonna be fine, but that's what I've been doing the last two days instead of blogging.
