Lest I forget...
I was watching a piece on WTVD about the passage of HB111, the carry in restaurants and parks bill. Not really bad but they gave time to some git who foretold gunfights in our restaurants and parks if this passed. He also didn't think people really wanted to take their families to dinner in a restaurant if someone with a concealed weapon was sitting in the booth next to them. Is this the best they've got? This is why we are winning.
I've got another question for you Paul.
How many people are dead because of Jim and Sara Brady and the damage they did with their gun control schemes? Do they even notice the blood on their hands?

Time for another house cleaning.
It looks like the Republicans are going to back down on the budget with reductions of $33B rather than the original $66B they were pushing. Both sums are drops in the bucket considering how much money is pissed away by the Fed annually. So w are they backing down? Is it that even after a historic victory in 2010, they're afraid of the Democrats controlling the narrative and putting the blame for a government shutdown in their lap. Is the tag "extreme" more frightening to them than pissing off the voters who put them in office, or is it, as Borepatch says, they really don't want to cut the budget after all. Borepatch has it right. The old timers are too comfortable with the power they wield in Washington to risk it. I'm tired of this shit. Aren't you?

One more thing...
My oldest daughter and I went to see Sucker Punch this evening. The visuals were great as was the action. The plot suited me find and the actors pulled off their characters with ease. I liked it. It also had Scott Glenn in it and I've always liked him. The post title is his line.
My conversation with the cashier at the ticket counter was as follows:
Cashier: Are you a Senior?
Me: [Shrug] I'm Fifty.
Cashier: I was just trying to see if you got a discount.
Me: Honey, If it will get me a discount, I'm a Senior.
I got in for $6.75.
Me to my giggling daughter as we walked away tickets in hand: Shut up.

The Fix Gun Checks Act of 2011
This bill would bar anyone who has been arrested for a drug crime within the last five years from owning a gun. Note the operative word is "arrested" not "convicted". A police officer arrests you for simple possession of marijuana and the charges are dropped because it was some other legal green plant matter? You're barred. This bit of fuckwittery has been brought to you by Senator Chuckie Schumer of New York.
Call your representatives and ask them to vote against this stupidity.

$461 million dollars for a light rail system that is only 13 minutes faster than the train we already have? I know what is wrong with President Obama. ...in the North Carolina House while pro-gun forces try to get the Ross Amendment removed. The Amendment would allow servers in restaurants to ask customers ordering alcohol if they have a concealed weapon. Deborah Ross, after whom the amendment is named, added the amendment in an attempt to build opposition to the bill. She was responsible for blocking the Castle Doctrine bill in the House last year. There's a bill in Congress that...
...would require ISPs to keep records of where their customers surf the web. Child pornography is the excuse given but can you really imagine the Federal Government being able to keep their sticky fingers out of the data if some Federal Agency suddenly discovers a need. I mean, it'd probably be very helpful in investigations of copyright infringement and harassment of the political opposition. This is just another fucking slippery slope and child pornography is just the excuse. Enough already. More here.

Fuzzy Nation
One of my favorite writers, after only Robert A. Heinlein, is H. Beam Piper. His books are among those that I reread often and get as much enjoyment from them as I did the first time. One of favorites is Little Fuzzy. Turns out that John Scalzi has written a "reboot" of Piper's novel which will be released in May called Fuzzy Nation. I liked Scalzi's Old Man's War and it's sequels. I've not read his other novels pass the first couple of chapters. They just haven't appealed. The thought of any writer rewriting Little Fuzzy hits me the same as say someone deciding to rewrite Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Neither needs a rewrite or a reboot. They both hold up damn fine as they are. That having been said, I'll read Fuzzy Nation when it comes out, but Scalzi's decided to try and fill some big shoes. I'm not sure he can.

Finger off the trigger...
A Florida Highway Patrol Officer shot herself in the thigh during qualification. FHP carries a Glock in .45GAP. The story doesn't say, but I'd bet it was a case of the officer holstering without taking her finger off the trigger. It's something you see quite a bit with the Glock and more and more with the M&P. Rule three vioaltions can be a bitch.

Update: The FHP Officer did not shoot herself. She was shot by a supervisor during inspection. The rule three violation still applies.

Code Words
Most gun owners know that the word "commonsense" isn't a code word for "confiscation." -- President Barak ObamaExcept Mr. President, in our experience with proponents of gun control, that's exactly what words like common sense and reasonable have always meant. And they took us down a slippery slope that we've only just began to see the top of again. Mr. President, do you sense distrust? Hell yeah. So, no thanks and no compromise.

Self-Defense in Canada.
In January, a Canadian was charged with pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm and two counts of careless storage of a firearm after he fired warning shots at thugs throwing Molotov cocktails at his house. Now local prosecutors have dropped all but the storage charges. Apparently, they doubted a jury would convict. Common Sense and self-defense may still be possibilities in Canada.

NC HB 181: The We Are Better Than Thee Bill
Rep. Stephen LaRoque has proposed a change in North Carolina's concealed carry law that would allow "state, federal and local elected officials with a concealed carry permit to take their weapons anywhere it's not forbidden by federal law". He claims he'd rather apply this standard to all CCW permit holders, but since that's not feasible this is a a "good first step". I'd have more respect for LaRoque if he had the guts to go for the gold and there has never been a better time to try in North Carolina. His "good first step" smells of lip service and excuses. HB 181 is a bad bill as is any law that places politicians above those they serve. Any legislator that supports this trash needs to start looking for another job. You need to call your representatives and make sure they understand that fact.

A Zero Tolerance Moment...
A student in Virginia has been suspended for opening a door for a woman with her hands full. The school has a security system and students and staff have been forbidden to open doors for people entering the school. I can almost see the reasoning here. You can't maintain the integrity of the system if people keep circumventing it. It's the jump to suspension that pisses me off. It's the inflexibility of the bureaucratic mind. Why not a counseling or in-school detention. Why suspension? Even in this incident I say zero tolerance policies are the result of bureaucratic cowardice.

Restaurant Carry in NC
In the State of North Carolina off duty police officers can carry concealed anywhere in the State with the exception of Federal property and under the influence of alcohol or any other impairing substance. Tis my opinion that a "civilian" concealed carry permit should allow the holder to do the same. I won't hold my breath until it happens. The CCW permit in North Carolina has so many restrictions as to where you can carry it's the next thing to useless. That's also my opinion. I guess it's better than nothing but not by much. There's a move in the North Carolina House to ease at least one of those restrictions.
HB 111 would allow a CCW holder to carry in a restaurant whether the restaurant serves alcohol or not. It won't effect the prohibition against carrying while under the influence and it means you don't have to leave your pistol in the car or at home just to eat out and stay legal. There are those warn us of gunfights by drunks in bars. If that's happened, the current prohibition hasn't stopped it, and I don't believe anyone who has to go through the shit they have to go through in NC to get a CCW permit is going to risk it on such stupidity. Now if we can get rid of prohibitions on carrying concealed at a parade, event that charges admission, etc, etc... Call your representatives and let them know where you stand. The antis are already warning of blood in the streets if it passes.
