This cartoon is even more ironic, as the word is used nowadays, because the cartoon depicts the famous battle between the "Monitor and the Merrimac". The big ship with the Republican elephant flag is the Virginia, and the little ship with the Democrat donkey flag is the Monitor.
It really is true that the Democrats rewrite history. They'd have you believe that it was the mean ol' Republicans who wanted to own slaves in 1861, not the Dems.
Oh, never mind.
