Telling Lies
Fantasy vs Reality on Background ChecksThe fantasy is the claim by the Brady Bunch that 93% of Americans support universal background checks. Even in States where background check initiatives have passed, the highest percentage was around 60% and THAT'S with Bloomberg and his fellow butt heads buying the elections. The anti-gun people keep making shit up and expecting people to buy it.

Bet he won't make that mistake again...
The issue is that Nevada is designated as a Point-of-Contact (POC) state, meaning that, like Pennsylvania, they have a state background check system that is designated by the FBI to conduct background checks under the Brady Act. Bloomberg’s new law states that the checks have to be conducted by the FBI’s National Instant Check System. Given that Nevada is a POC state, the FBI will not conduct checks on behalf of Nevada. The law cannot be complied with, and is therefore completely unworkable and unenforceable. Can you imagine just how pissed Mikey is right now? Now THAT'S funny.

"There is a technical, literary term for those who mistake the opinions and beliefs of characters in a novel for those of the author. The term is 'idiot'."I had to keep that quote in the forefront of my mind as I read this book. The Millennial lead is one of those characters that in real life drive me nuts. The Marshall, I liked, and I sense, or at least hope, the lead will learn from his example as the series progresses. I did not enjoy this as much as I have other novels by Birmingham. That could just as easily be accounted to my own political bias as the book. He has promised more books in this series. I will read them, and hope I enjoy what follows more.

Time for a new space race?
China claims to have a working version of NASA's impossible engine orbiting the Earth - and will use it in satellites 'imminently'
The question becomes, given the magnitude of this, why is it a surprise? We have 21 expensive intelligence agencies; not one of them knew the Chinese orbited an EM Drive? Of course it will be a while before we can do orbital tests. We have no rockets. That’s preparedness. Perhaps Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos can help? This is a signal larger than Sputnik. If the Intelligence Community knows about Russian hacking, why doesn’t it know about Chinese testing of a reactionless drive? - Jerry Pournelle

I pretty much love about two thirds of his novel and couldn't care less about the rest. The Axis of Time and Dave Hooper books were great. I couldn't get past the first few chapters of Without Warning. It just couldn't hold my attention. The Stalin's Hammer stories are one novel broken into sections. I like 'em but wish he would have just published them as one book. Since I can't get what I want this will do. They are every bit as good as the other Axis of Time books. I'm sure, hope, he will write more. Until then, he has a new book that I'm trying out. I'll let you know what I think when I've finished it.

This is the final volume of Weber's Safehold series. It is 758 pages long and reads like it. I usually pick up a Weber books and can't put it down until done. No problem putting this down. Lots of talk and not so much action. Now, that's not to say I didn't like it. I did, just not as much as the previous novels in the series. Weber did provide a satisfying ending to the series and if you've been following this tale you will be pleased as well. I look forward to Weber's next project whatever it is.

Fearmongering and Lies
Reciprocity means if Texas permits a man to walk into a coffee shop, a church or a school with a Bushmaster AR-15 slung over his shoulder, Connecticut must follow suit. It would mean that every time that happened, we’d relive the horror of Dec. 14, 2012, while being forced to stand down, powerless to act.No. National reciprocity would require that the concealed carry permits of one state be honored by all others much like the vehicle operators license of one state are honored in all other states. It has fuck all to do with open carry. That would remain the prerogative of the individual states. The slightest bit of research would tell anyone this. The above quote may be ignorance of the facts. If so, it is a willful ignorance intended to scare people who know less than the writer. It is fear mongering. It is lying. BUT that's what gun bigots do.

A Review of Miss Sloane...
This saves me the trouble of having to watch it.
I haven't and won't see it. Based on what I've read, it's a Hollywood gun control wet dream with little or no relationship to reality. At a cost of $18,000,000 it may break even...maybe. The lead, Jessica Chastain, will probably get an Oscar nomination. Then it will fade into the Lifetime oblivion it deserves.
UPDATE: Tom Madden, the Director, claims the production did not consult with either side of the gun control debate. Apparently, the Brady Bunch and actors in the film didn't get that message. AND Wikipedia's entry on the film calls it a box office bomb. Drum roll...it made 1.7 million over the weekend. What did they expect. People want to be entertained at the theater, not preached to.
UPDATE: As of 12-16-2016, 2.7 million in ticket sales.

Quote of the Day
I've got to say: if you're trying to make a case against Trump via trying to reverse the election by mob rule, by threats of violence against electors, and by openly planning an insurrection -- er, "disruption"?I'd kinda figured Trump was a one term President. Now, I'm not so sure. If the whiners are the guys who select Trump's opponent in 2020, he'll be so far to the Left even Trump can win a second term. Then you're making one hell of a good case that Trump is less of a threat to democracy than his opponents.

I read Urbach's Custer at the Alamo some months back and liked it. It a time travel/alternate reality story where Custer and the 7th Cavalry are transported from the Little Big Horn to San Antonio in 1836. They defeat Santa Anna's forces and change history. This novel completes the story. I liked it better than the first. It is well done. You get a different view, and I think, truthful view of Custer than what is currently popular. The story flows well. I would like to see more in this genre by Urbach. It's not an expensive book and worth the chance if you've not read any of his other novels.

Gallup: Support for ban on assault weapons hits all-time low
“All-time” means “in the 20 years they’ve been measuring this,” but still. In 1996, amid soaring public concern about crime, support for a ban stood at 57/42. Twenty years later, after a long period of stupendous decline in crime rates in many major cities, it stands at … 36/61. As recently as four years ago, the gap between support for a ban and opposition was still fairly narrow at 44/51. Four years later, the bottom has dropped out. Huh.Just another factoid that the Left will ignore at will.

The Bully Party
Team Clinton has succeeded in perpetuating one of the greatest evils I have seen in my lifetime. Her side has branded Trump supporters (40%+ of voters) as Nazis, sexists, homophobes, racists, and a few other fighting words. Their argument is built on confirmation bias and persuasion. But facts don’t matter because facts never matter in politics. What matters is that Clinton’s framing of Trump provides moral cover for any bullying behavior online or in person. - Scott AdamsAs bad as it was during the Obama runs, it wasn't this bad. I'd thought of Trump as a bully. No evidence. He just struck me as the type. He'd be a piker compared to Hillary Clinton.
