A Teachable Moment

Ohio middle school student suspended for ‘liking’ Instagram photo of a fake gun

The student liked an image of an airsoft gun on Instagram while he was home. The next day upon arrival at school he was searched and suspended for 10 days. The school administrators insist they have jurisdiction over your child 24/7. The suspension has since been revoked, but this should be a teachable moment for the school administrators. I think a lawsuit would do it.

Compounding the Stupid

In Wisconsin, a High School was evacuated because a student worn a Darth Vader costume to school.

"Ashwaubenon Public Safety is not seeking any recourse toward the student as it has been determined that this was merely a mistake or lapse in judgment," reads a statement from police.

Yes, there was a "lapse in judgment"...by the parent who reported the kid wearing a costume, by the school administrator who called the police, and by the police who responded to the event and evacuated the school then failed to admit the entire "incident was an overreaction on their part. The only people who should be held responsible for this charlie foxtrot are the adults. Blaming the kid who chose to wear a costume of a fantasy character to school is just compounding the stupid.

More Zero Tolerence BS

In Alabama, a young girl is given a water gun by a male student. Another students sees it and not knowing it was a water gun reports the incident to the administration. The girl admitted she had it and got expelled for a year as a result. Seems a tad excessive to me. Zero Tolerance. What School Administrators do instead of something useful.

4-Year-Old Brings Shell Casing to Preschool. Principal Suspends Him for 7 Days, Calls Child Services.

A four year old took a shell casing to school and when it was discovered found himself expelled for seven days and told "that if his "enthusiasm for guns continued," he would be expelled." He also apparently likes to pretend his toys are guns. Where that my child, the Principal would have been asked some pointed questions about where she got telling me how to raise my child, and told an "enthusiasm" for guns was a damn good thing. I'd have probably been arrested. There were several reasons my kids where home schooled. This is but one.

The mother of the four year old was more restrained and told her story on Facebook where it went viral and hopefully embarrassed and brought discredit to the staff of A Place for Growth. Honestly the name of the school should have been a clue. Zero tolerance, it's what bureaucrats do instead of something useful.

In Alabama, a five year old girl was forced by her school officials to sign a no violence/no suicide contract for drawing a picture of a gun then pointing a crayon at another student and making gun sounds. The school officials don't need to be worried bout homicidal five year olds. Homicidal parents are another matter.
