Assault Weapon Bans: A Solution in Search of a Problem

Again, analysis regarding the AR-15 — the so-called “weapon of choice” of mass shooters — produces less-than-impressive numbers. Between 2007 and 2018, 173 people were killed by mass shooters using an AR-15, according to a New York Times analysis — roughly, 15 per year. (For perspective, 13 people die per year from vending machines falling on them.) The fearmongering regarding this weapon becomes even more apparent when one considers the estimated 8 million AR-15s currently in circulation — the vast majority of which will never be involved in a crime.

According to the bill, any semiautomatic firearm that uses a magazine — handgun, rifle or shotgun — equipped with a “pistol grip,” would be banned. That sounds like a limitation, but it is not.

A pistol grip (on page 2) is defined (on page 13) as “a grip, a thumb-hole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip.” In other words, the gun list does not matter. It is a smokescreen designed to distract people from the true meaning of the bill. And it has done a magnificent job. It worked!

Any semi-automatic firearm that exists, with anything on it you can grip, is banned.

We need to see more of this.

Now is the time to start calling your candidates, both for State and Federal office, and asking them a simple question. Do they support or oppose the Obama Assault Weapons Ban? Yes or no answers only, please.

I don’t ask much of an editorialist these days. Considering what pops up on the editorial pages its best not to. What I do ask is that the writer, before they put pen to paper, do a little research. I do ask that the writer not take the words of politicians at face value. I do ask that your fact be, ya know, facts.

Susan Estrich failed the test. She failed it when she repeated Calderon’s statement that 80% of the 75,000 firearms seized over three years during Mexico’s current spat of violence with local drug lords come from gun shops in the United States. That’s misinformation [a lie] and Estrich is either incompetent at her vocation because she repeats it or doesn’t care because it supports her aim. I'm not sure which is worse.

Thus, if the “last three years” the President mentioned are 2007, 2008, and 2009, only 9,760 of the guns seized in those years – the total of 2007 and 2008 – definitely came from the U.S. The U.S. share for 2009 has not yet been reported, but even if it doubled the total of 2008, the U.S. share for all three years would be less than a third of the 75,000 seizures in Mexico. A more realistic U.S. share is between 20 and 25 percent.

That’s called a fact. I suggest you become acquainted with the concept. That’s also a lot of guns, but still not enough to let you, Calderon, or our elected officials, ignore the Constitution and strip me of my right to bear arms. By the way semi-automatic rifles, what you call assault weapons, in .223 cal., 7.62mm, or other calibers are used for sport, hunting and, home protection. That’s another fact you failed to research.

I won’t say I wasn’t bothered...

...by Mexican President Calderon’s comments on the White House lawn or to Congress. He was critical of the Arizona immigration law. That’s an internal disagreement between family members and not one bit of the neighbor’s business. He wants Congress to renew the Assault weapons ban because guns are allegedly finding their way south from the US. I’m sorry he’s having the problems he is down south but my rights aren’t subject to the needs of Calderon or his nation’s citizens. I am pissed off that CIC Obama [and the first C don’t stand for Commander in my book] and the Democrats in Congress had the gaul to agree with and applaud Calderon’s comments. Calderon should have been escorted to the border and ordered over with a boot print on his ass. The fact that he wasn’t tells us a lot about Obama’s agenda regarding immigration and our Second Amendment rights.

A call for a AWB renewal

The private Joint Mexican-US Task Force has made its recommendations and among them is a renewal of the Assault Weapons Ban. Whether or not the Democrats or the Obama Administration want to stick their hands in that hornets nest remains to be seen, but we can't let our guard down for a moment. Pelosi and friends have already demonstrated they'll do whatever it takes to push through their agenda. They don't care what line they cross.
