Older than we thought

Painted 'Comics' with 'Speech Bubbles' Found in Ancient Roman Tomb

Hundreds of illustrated figures — humans, animals and gods — appear in the paintings. Their poses demonstrate routine activities, such as harvesting crops and building a defensive wall, in a city that was a thriving center of commerce and culture during the second century A.D.

But the mural doesn't just contain pictures. Dozens of inscriptions appear alongside the figures; they describe the action in the local language of Aramaic (though written in Greek letters), and they seem to serve the same purpose as speech bubbles do in comics, the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) recently reported.

Not So Sure About That Last Part

Flood by Andrew Vachss

I read this back in 1985 when it first came out and liked it enough to continue with the series through Down in the Zero. Then I stopped. Even for crime novels they are really dark and I didn't want dark. That being said, it's a fine novel and highly recommended. Who knows, maybe I'll pick up where I left off.

Artist Norm Breyfogle Passes Away at Age 58
I fondly remember his run on Detective Comics. I stopped reading it shortly after he stopped drawing it. I believe his health kept him on the sidelines the last few years. This is a damn shame.

Have the committee vote then an immediate confirmation vote in the Senate. Judge Kavanaugh will sink or swim probably swim. That's what the Democrats are afraid of. that's why we get delay, accusation, delay, accusation. Provide proof? That's such a naive concept. Kavanaugh is guilty because he was nominated by Trump. Enough already. Republicans grow a fucking spine. VOTE.

This Should Be Fun

Girls und Panzer Director's New TV Anime Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai Releases Its 1st Teaser

No plot details as yet, but it looks like a Girls und Panzer type show with WW2 era Japanese fighter planes. This should be fun but I'd rather see the next Girls und Panzer episode first.

Hitler's War by Harry Turtledove

This is the first in Turtledove's The War That Came Early series. I burned out on Turtledove a short time after How Few Remain was published. I loved his Guns of the South and Worldwar series but can pretty much take or leave anything else he's written. They seem to much alike to me. This one of his alternate histories. The point of divergence is Hitler invades Czechoslovakia before the British and French can roll over and give it to him for "peace in our time." It is to Turtledove usual quality which is way above average. If you like his stuff you will like this. Me, I'm still trying to decide whether I'll followup with the rest of the series. I'd also note that even at eight years old the publisher wants $11.99 for the Kindle edition. That's too high. Go to the library instead.

That's the way it should be.

Pr. George’s police thought they were bursting into home of a drug dealer. They were at an innocent man’s door instead.
Two police officers were wounded during the entry. Local police have admitted they were in the wrong and no charges will be brought against the shooter. That's the way it should be.

Crime Wave UK: Govt Moves to Stop Knife Sales as Blade Crime Hits 7-Year High
This should work out about as well as their gun control has. Their gun crime rate is up 44% per the story. In what reality will knife crime be any different? All it will do is punish the law abiding while the criminals ignore it. The same old story.

Burt Reynolds, RIP

I watched Smokey and the Bandit again for the first time in decades last night. Mostly to celebrate the late Burt Reynolds but also to see if the movie still held up. It did. The one scene that brought both laughter and tears was the one where an elderly lady notifies the Bandit that a highway is shut down due to an accident. The camera then shows us the lady standing in her car the back half of which is under the trailer of a semi. The driver tells her that she needs to learn how to use a turn signal. WE, my siblings and I, took my mom's driving privileges from her when she drove through a red light and was t-boned. The van tumbled. She walked away uninjured which says something about her relationship with the almighty. She told me she couldn't see the traffic light for the sun and just knew it had to be green. That scene reminded me of mom and how much I miss her.

I wish the family of Mr. Reynolds my condolences and only fond memories in their loss. Mr. Reynolds, rest inand peace and thank you.

Why We Fight

While a lot of us might not be drawn to support Trump and his fellow travelers in the mid-terms and come 2020, I can certainly be convinced to vote against former President Obama and his fellow travelers both Democrat and Republican. THAT you can count on.
Barack to the Rescue: Republican voters just found their motivation to vote in November
Truth is, while I might not like Trump as a person, he's been dead on policy wise since day one and has my support for that alone.

This Young Lady Can Use Some Help

About a year ago a young pregnant lady in Arkansas was attacked in her home. She used her husband's pistol to shoot the evil git three times in the chest. He dies. At the time of the incident the police declared it self-defense and no charges were filed. A year later local prosecutors have charged her not with killing the man in self-defense but holding firearm to do it. She has a no violent marijuana conviction on her record that makes her a prohibited person. National Review has a story on this travesty of justice. You can get the specific details there. Krissy Noble needs your help to fight this in court. A GoFundMe account has been set up for her defense. She faces six years in prison if convicted. She can use your help.

A Fistful of Elven Gold by Alex Stewart

In which a gnomish bounty hunter get pulled into elvish political shenanigans. I generally don't read fantasy of this sort but it was a pleasant surprise. It easily grabbed my interest and kept it throughout. I liked it enough that I'll probably look up this authors other titles. Recommended.
