This is listed by Amazon as a novel, but at 104 pages I don't think it qualifies. What this is is an alternative history novella placed in 1863 American where a civil war of a different sort is about to break out. The characters are all historical figures of the era and there is a twist that any Civil War buff will see coming a mile off. I do wish it had been longer and I hope we will see more of this history. Recommended.

The Problem With CNN’s School Shooting Count

If CNN's list of school shootings is limited to incidents where a student is either the victim or perpetrator of a shooting by an actual gun on school grounds, only 12* of the 22 incidents would qualify. Of those 12 incidents, 9 happened at K-12 schools and 3 happened at universities. Most of those 12 do not closely resemble the shootings in Santa Fe or Parkland. Most were targeted attacks on a single victim or did not result in serious injuries. Four of the 12 shootings resulted in fatalities, 3 resulted in multiple fatalities, and 2 (Santa Fe and Parkland) were mass shootings where more than 4 people were killed.

Researchers from Northeastern University revealed their finding in February that shootings at K-12 schools are not more common than they used to be and schools have become safer than they were in the 1990s.

The publisher dropped the book and now they are pushing for Indiegogo to drop him. My aren't SJWs hateful little shits. God forbid somebody they don't like get into their club. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE BOOK, DON'T BUT IT!. Oh no, that's not good enough for these Leftist pricks and prickettes. If they don't like it or it's creators nobody else is allowed to buy it either.

Bringing a Knife to a Gunfight

Police shot dead a knifeman in central Paris Saturday night after an attack that saw one victim stabbed to death and another five injured.

Responding to the ongoing incident, officers initially attempted to taser the assailant, but after that failed shot the man dead.

The knifeman, who stabbed random passersby was heard to ahout “Allah Akbar” as he struck, reports France’s Le Figaro. Of the injured, two are reported to be in a critical condition.

The area around the assault, in Paris’ Second District has been locked down by police.

Some of these shooters carried multiple weapons. There were forty-one handguns, twenty-six rifles, six shotguns, and one knife. Twenty were classified as mass shootings, Seven took place in schools. Eight were stopped by armed civilians. There was a twenty percent increase from the 2014/15 totals and many more casualties.

Take from this what you will, but the money quote for me is this...

It was apparently popular enough when it came out for Spielberg to make it into a movie. I read it. It was okay but nothing special. Definitely not worth the ten bucks for the ebook. Read it or don't.

It's a re-read for me. Ringo has written a first contact novel place, with permission, in Howard Taylor's Schlock Mercenary world but way before the events of the comic. A gate is placed in out solar system. An alien race shows up and gives us the old, "Nice place you got here. Be a shame if something happened to it." Earth has no choice but to pay Danegeld but a one guy starts looking for a way out. It's typical Ringo and the first in a trilogy. Very funny. Very well done. Also first in a trilogy.

Facebook shows traffic stopped in both directions on Liberty Road in Eldersburg. The sheriff's office said the deputy tried to guide the groundhog off the road. The groundhog then went toward the deputy, who shot the animal.

Several residents had concerns about the killing of the groundhog and the way the situation was handled by the sheriff's deputy. Plenty of people were outraged online.

The sheriff's office said in a statement, "He realized that it was not responding as expected for an animal that was not being cornered or trapped. Believing the groundhog to be either sick or injured, the deputy then put the animal down for the public’s safety."

NSSF Expels Dick’s Sporting Goods

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industries, Board of Governors today unanimously voted to expel Dick’s Sporting Goods from membership for conduct detrimental to the best interests of the Foundation.

Dick’s Sporting Goods recently hired a Washington D.C.-based government affairs firm, for “[l]obbying related to gun control.” Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Edward W. Stack announced earlier this year the retail chain would end sales of modern sporting rifles, voluntarily raise the age to 21 to purchase firearms in their stores and called for more restrictive legislation. Dick’s later announced they would destroy the remaining modern sporting rifle inventory. NSSF responded that business decisions should be individually made, but was nonetheless disappointed and the decision does not reflect the reality of the vast majority of law-abiding gun owners.

I wonder how Dick's Shareholders feel about what's going to happen to the value of their stock because of virtue signaling by their CEO? Does anyone remember what happened to Smith and Wesson when they bend over for the Clinton White House?

This is the latest volume in Weber's Honor Harrington series. In the last couple of books in the series the conflict with the Solarian Federation has been ramping up with the Mesan Alignment egging everyone along from the sidelines. Weber's MO with past books is either side beats the crap out of each other with the tide shifting back and forth until Manticore and Harrington coming out on top in the end.

SPOILER. Kinda, Sorta.

I had expected the usual back and forth for at least a couple more novels. Nope. The conflict with the Sollies is brought to an end. If not for the Alignment still being out there to cause trouble I'd say this could be a satisfying end to the series. I hope not. Read it. You won't be disappointed.
