Chicago Police: Woman accidentally killed by officer fire

The officer opened up on a target without even the slightest regard for who might be behind the target. The officer intentionally pulled the trigger. The death might have been unintentional but it was no accident. Now I'll be interested to see what action the Chicago Police Department takes against their officer. I'd bet none.

Fix by J. A. Konrath, Ann Voss Peterson, and F. Paul Wilson

It's a Repairman Jack/Codename: Chandler Thriller. Never read anything by Peterson or Konrath before. I guess that's gonna change. It's a short novel and takes place prior to the events in The Tomb. No supernatural elements at all which I like. I read it in one sitting. It's only 140 pages long. If you need a Repairman Jack fix, this'll do fine. I haven't enjoyed a Repairman Jack story this much since about the middle of the series. I'd honestly like to see more collaborations by these guys, and if it's more Repairman Jack all the better. Highly Recommended.

I was sifting through Amazon and came across this gem. I've never heard of Travis Clemmons but I read about any fiction Williamson writes. I hadn't heard of or seen this one. So I bought it and began to read it. The general plot is that a police detective is shot in the head in the line of duty and wakes up believing he's Sherlock Holmes. What follows held my attention at every twist. Well done and I look forward to another. Highly Recommended.

Another chapter in the 1632 universe. These novels have a consistent quality regardless of whom Flint's co-writer is. They're good, but I'm honestly not as excited about them as I've been in the past. Which means I'll read them, but they may not go to the top of the pile as they have in the past. Now if Flint writes a singleton THAT will go to the top of the pile.

He's gonna run as an independent. None of the left wing nut jobs of the Democrat party will vote for him. He is a centrist. At best, he'll draw independents from the the center right and thus draw votes from the GOP nominee who sure the hell won't be Trump. Trump will also run as an independent drawing votes from the right. Who wins? Hillary. That's the only hope in hell she has to win and I think that was the plan all along. It worked for her husband during his first run. Remember Perot?

For those of you keeping track, the Democrats and their allies on the left have now: voted in the Senate to repeal the First Amendment, proposed imprisoning people for holding the wrong views on global warming, sought to prohibit the showing of a film critical of Hillary Rodham Clinton, proposed banning politically unpopular academic research, demanded that funding politically unpopular organizations and causes be made a crime and that the RICO organized-crime statute be used as a weapon against targeted political groups. They have filed felony charges against a Republican governor for vetoing a piece of legislation, engaged in naked political persecutions of members of Congress, and used the IRS and the ATF as weapons against political critics.

I got this with the purchase of a Baen bundle. It was not the reason I bought the bundle. Was I blown away by it? No. The author's tendency to refer to a scene from a movie to describe something rather than actually describing the scene irritated me as did did the New Age mumbo jumbo. A plus? Otto Skorzeny. I did finish it. This was not a bad book. There were just some things that bugged me. Wynne writes a sequel I will probably read it. Like I said, Skorzeny.

A Good Ending

In St. Louis County a home owner heard two bad guys pounding on his front door. He went for his pistol and took the time to call 911 while the two guys moved to the back door and kicked it down. This lead to an exchange of gun fire. The end result was one bad guy fled, one died, and the home owner walked away.

GRNC Alert 12-09-15 NC'S ATTORNEY GENERAL TO BRING MODERN DAY MCCARTHYISM TO NORTH CAROLINA

Parroting Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper recently demanded state legislation to deny gun purchases for anyone on the Terrorist Watch List, saying: "Stopping terror suspects from getting weapons that could harm our state and its people makes common sense. Even if Washington won't act, we can." By barring gun purchases to 1,000,000 people on the Terrorist Watch List, Cooper surpasses even Barack Obama's proposal to deny roughly 50,000 people on the No Fly List.

Fret not that tens of thousands of lawful citizens - including Senator Ted Kennedy - have been denied airline transportation thanks to misidentification. Never mind the Terrorist Watch List is so inaccurate it includes 72 Department of Homeland Security employees. Forget that stringent gun control in both France and California failed to stop terrorists from getting weapons. And don't bother to read the Huff Post's "7 Ways You (Yes, You) Could End Up On A Terrorist Watch List".

Why not? Because all that is trivial compared to having the state's top cop and would-be governor proposing to flout the Constitution by denying you due process under both the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. You have no "right" to fly, but as affirmed by the Supreme Court in DC v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago, you definitely have a right to keep and bear arms.

America has traveled this road before, and the landscape wasn't pretty. Widespread violations of Constitutional rights and civil liberties in the late 1950s against "subversives" on secret blacklists compiled by the FBI were so shockingly un-American, they earned their own moniker: McCarthyism.

Where will Cooper's modern McCarthyism end? Once government is free to deny a fundamental, enumerated Constitutional right for merely being included on a secret list, are our other cherished freedoms far behind? Free speech? Freedom of religion? History demonstrates that when governments are free to use the full powers of the state against those on secret lists, the first casualty is liberty.

Due process - notice, an opportunity to be heard, the right to face one's accuser - has been America's bulwark against tyranny since the Founders penned the Constitution.

People are placed on the No Fly and Terror Watch Lists usually without any idea they are on it, without any idea what got them on it, without being notified of the process to get themselves off, and without any due process. That's what rankles me most. Attorney General Roy Cooper is fine with North Carolinian's rights being denied without due process. AND now he wants to be Governor. I'll vote for McCrory first.

Supreme Justice by Max Allan Collins

Here are a couple of quick things first. Mr. Collins, a Glock doesn't have an external safety. The primary safety for a Glock is keeping your finger off the trigger until time to fire. Also, semi-automatic pistols have magazines not clips. I'm sure you've heard this ad nauseam from gunnies, but my blog is at least in part a gun blog so.... If your firearms adviser didn't pick up on this stuff you need another.

I understand Collins caught a lot of crap from the Right for the politics in this book. I, politically, consider myself a right leaning libertarian. I can assume what Collins politics are, but making that assumption based on the politics of a character in a book says more about the critic than the writer. Niven's Law. Go look it up. The protagonist in this book was, I understand, intended to be left leaning centrist. That may be how Collins intended to write him, but what I see from my position is a lot farther left than "left leaning centrist". This might put conservatives off. Having said that who really cares. This book takes place some years in the future where the Court is dominated by conservative Justices. With the current occupant of the White House and the uncertainty of who follows, I don't really see that happening but this is fiction and in a way speculative fiction. The politics of the characters don't concern me. The depiction of the Justices don't concern me. The story does and the story is interesting and as well written as what usually comes from Collins. This is the second in a series, and I now I wish hadn't let reviews on Amazon put me off. I read #2 first. The twist in this one was spoiled. This is a good book, and I suggest you read it.

One Second After by William R. Forstchen

This one has been out awhile and I got it when it first hit the shelves. I read the first chapter, set it down, and didn't come back to it until last week. It didn't grab me fast enough back then. I'm glad I picked it back up. It is an excellent book. I should have known. I've read a number of Forstchen's books and never been disappointed. It tells the tale of what happens when the electricity gets turned off nationwide by EMP. Very well told and scary because it could happen today or anytime in the days to come. All it would take would be an enemy with a nuke. Highly recommended.

I don't follow the news closely. I don't have cable and what news I get is on the radio or off the internet. I saw a bit online about the shootings in San Bernadino but didn't read it. There isn't really any point this soon after the incident. No body really knows anything.

On the way to work my ride was listening to CNN on the radio [Sirius I guess]. The talking head was interviewing a Congresscritter. I didn't catch any names. They were discussing gun control in the wake of this "new mass shooting" and the need for universal background checks and a ban from the purchase of firearms by those on the no fly list. The blood wasn't even dry or the bodies cool and they were pushing their agenda. Blood dancing. It's what they do.

So I dragged and dropped and that seemed to work...

... but that still a pain in the ass. UPDATE: And now it's working fine.
