Sixty-six years ago today...

1945 – World War II: Hiroshima is devastated when the atomic bomb "Little Boy" is dropped by the United States B-29 Enola Gay. Around 70,000 people are killed instantly, and some tens of thousands die in subsequent years from burns and radiation poisoning.

The United States B-29 Enola Gay drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. This leads to the surrender of Japan thus avoiding an Allied invasion which would have cost millions of lives on both sides.

Since my Dad would have been one of the soldiers going ashore in said invasion I have some bias on the subject.

If there had been no use of the atomic bomb, or if Japan had not surrendered afterward, the launching of an invasion would have depended on the power of MacArthur's ego. If they Navy and Army Air Force got their way it would have been a 'Kilkenny Cats' starvation blockade. Either way the death toll would have made all the casualties of the fire bombing campaign look like a rounding error. And the Soviets would have grabbed Hokkaidou.
