Artemis by Andy Weir

A small time smuggler and roped into a bit of industrial vandalism and things go south. The twist is it takes place in Artemis, the moon's only city. The attraction isn't so much the story as the depiction of life on the moon a couple of decades in the future. Heinlein did it better but it's still a good read. Recommended.

Mass Killings: Myth, Reality, Solutions by David T. Hardy

In which David Hardy reviews the mental status of mass killers, the myths of mass killers, and then offers some solutions which you may or may not agree with. Hardy argues that the post Columbine mass killer is a narcissist bent on celebrity which the media gladly provides setting the stage for the next loser to emulate with an even bigger body count. One of his solutions would be for the media to display a bit of responsibility and not give the little bastards what they seek. Ain't gonna happen. Mass killers are rating gold for the mainstream media and provide these adjuncts to the Democrat party an excuse to push for gun control. At only sixty-eight pages this provides much more and copious footnotes. You may not agree with everything he says but at $2.99 for the Kindle version it is well worth the cost and will give you a base upon which to make your own. Highly recommended.

Comic Book Artist Russ Heath Dies at 91

Russ Heath has passed at the age of 91. He is one of my favorite artists. He drew pretty much everything from Westerns to War comics to Super-heroes to soft porn. He worked for Marval, DC, EC, and Playboy. His art was ripped off by Roy Lichtenstein. His art style was so distinctive you would recognize it at once. I was able to obtain a page of his art from his adaptation of Philip Wylie's Gladiator. I love his art and will sorely miss him. I hope he rests in peace.

Judge dismisses lawsuit over state's stalled implementation of gun background check initiative

Gun control advocates in Nevada managed with Bloomberg money to barely pass an initiative requiring universal background checks on firearms purchases. Apparently no one bothered to get anyone who had a clue to help draft the initiative. It required the FBI to take part and they said no. the gun control advocates filed suit to force the State to implement the law which was unenforceable as written. The court said no. Lots of Bloomberg money was spent to get the initiative passed for naught. Now more money has been spent to force the State to implement it...for naught.

That's damn funny however you look at it.

Victory at Peleliu: The 81st Infantry Division's Pacific Campaign by Bobby C. Blair and John Peter Decioccio
I remember that at one time in the top drawer of my parents dresser were were my Dad's separation papers from his service in the U. S. Army. Dad served in the Pacific during World War 2. I'd pull them out occasionally and Dad would occasionally talk about his service. He spoke about it rarely. He mentioned his training at Camp Rucker, spending time in California and Hawaii, and service on Angaur Island and the Philippines. My Dad died before I was at a point I was interested enough to ask specific questions and some papers and photographs I distinctly remember were missing from my mother's papers after her death.

My Dad was apart of the 81st Infantry Division. Apart from that, I have more questions than answers. This books helps with some of them. One being why he probably didn't talk about it a lot. It does give me a fair idea just what he went through on Angaur. The writers had family in the 81st and wanted to give it's members their due. Other depictions of the fighting on Peleliu emphasize the Marines participation and minimizes the contributions of the 81st. In that the writers succeed.

If the book has a fault, it is that by the time it was written so many of the remnant of the 81st were, like my Dad, gone. The recollections of those remaining do personalize the contents but not nearly enough. If you are interested in military history give it a try but at 24.99 for the Kindle version it is a bit pricey.
