NC Senate Passes Castle Doctrine.

SB 34 has passed in the Senate. Now we have to get it through the House. This was the roadblock last year. The committee chair who blocked it last year isn't chair anymore so maybe we'll get it through this year. Call your representatives and let them know where you stand on this.

Rule 3 Violation?

A high-ranking trooper accidentally fired her service weapon last week at the headquarters of the N.C. Highway Patrol in downtown Raleigh.

Maj. Patricia Poole, who commands the patrol's administrative services staff, was inside a bathroom in the Archdale Building when her .357 caliber Smith & Wesson discharged.

No one was injured."
The Highway Patrol's spokesman dismissed the incident with "Stuff happens, ... When you go to the restroom, you have about 10 pounds you have to take down to do ... whatever."

Yes, but it shouldn't. They're properly trained unlike civilian gun owners. I'm also curious as to whether it happened when she was dropping her drawers for "whatever" or when holstering afterwards. My bet would be on number two.

UPDATE: Sean has more here. The event isn't in question. The reporter's spin is.

The Tooth Fairy

My ten year old daughter is convinced the Tooth Fairy stole her Nintendo DS. She had it to and from her speech therapy appointment. The next day she couldn't find it. She's looked all over the house and my van. No Nintendo DS. Why the Tooth Fairy? She lost a tooth and left it under her pillow the night after her therapy appointment. The next morning her tooth and Nintendo were gone and a crisp five dollar was left under the pillow. She's a kid and it only stands to reason. We can't convince her otherwise. If we tell her the Tooth Fairy isn't real then she'll doubt the existence of the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and God. God help the Tooth Fairy next time my youngest loses a tooth.

McKissick on the Castle Doctrine

The State Representative from Durham, Floyd McKissick has a problem with the proposed Castle Doctrine
Durham Democrat Floyd McKissick argued against the inclusion of vehicles, asking what would happen if a nervous driver was approached in a rough neighborhood.

The person knocking on the window might just be a panhandler, a window-washer, or someone asking directions, McKissick said. “But if you’re already apprehensive, you might just decide to shoot ‘em without really wondering about what their true motives are. And once that person’s dead, they’re not going to be able to testify about their intent.
"What if?"Might?" "They'll be blood in the streets..." Those concerns of the possible have been brought up every time in every State where self-defense legislation of this sort has been tendered, and ya know what? It doesn't come to past. The problem here is an assumption by a anti-gun politician that all gun owners are either nervous nellies with a hair trigger, violent sociopaths looking for their first kill, or, well, Representative McKissick and thus incapable of telling the difference between a panhandler and a violent thug intent on breaking into a person's car. Just because you can't manage to tell the difference Floyd don't mean we can't.

NC: Castle Doctrine Update

It's out of Committee and we should have a vote int he Senate as soon as tomorrow. This is SB 34 but not as originally introduced. It was amended and now vehicles as well as the home and has a "stand your ground" provision. This makes it a much stronger bill and worthy of our support. John Richardson has more here. Call your Senators and ask them to support this bill.

Unintended Consequences

The Democrat Senators in Wisconsin on the lam to prevent passage of legislation that limits the unions may wish they had stayed. A quorum is required only for fiscal legislation. Just imagine for a moment the mischief in which a simple majority might engage? Heh! CCW anyone?

Quote of the Day

The mystery of government is not how Washington works but how to make it stop. - P. J. O'Rourke

In Great Britain...

...a young man defended his home and family with a BB gun when a burglar broke into his house and attempted to steal his motorcycle. He shot the burglar when said burglar attacked him with an iron bar and brick. The burglar reported the matter to the police and ended up being arrested himself. The young man who defended himself was initially afraid he would be arrested and in formerly Great Britain that wouldn’t have surprised me but in this case he wasn’t. That he even had the fear shows just how fucked up things are in the UK but at least some cops in there still recognize legitimate self-defense. Damned surprising.

With the encouragement of the most reprehensible administration in America history, we see the last stages of Francis Fox Piven's wet dream being acted out in the streets of Madison...the "proletariat" rising up to challenge us poor stupid bastards who do the work, pay the taxes and do our best to make sure the lights come on in America every morning. - Michael Bane
My understanding is the Republicans asked the Public sector Unions to help out in the budget crisis by taking a smaller pension and a larger contribution to health care. They haven't banned collective bargaining or tried to break the unions. What they get in response is this. As Tam put it "What are you griping about? At least you have a job. With benefits, no less." Many don't.

My wife has been holding my Browning Buckmark hostage for some time. She's made noises about me giving her my Kahr9 in exchange, but that ain't gonna happen. This is neat. It's a bit violent but if you don't mind watching anthropomorphic animals [rabbits] shooting, knifing, and blowing to hell other anthropomorphic animals [camels] it's a fun ride. Pentagon Fingered as a Source of Narco-Firepower in Mexico

The very interesting story is here. Here's a taste.
Again, this is the U.S. state Department confirming that it suspects U.S. military munitions sold in the 1990s to a foreign military were subsequently diverted to Mexican narco-traffickers.
The military grade weapons aren't coming from gun stores, but we knew that already. I wonder what other interesting tidbits are hiding in the WikiLeaks memos?

A Poll

There''s a poll over at USA Today on high cap magazines. Go vote.

A thought...

They contested the need to keep guns at home given that Switzerland hasn't come under threat since World War II.
And maybe, just maybe, the reason Switzerland hasn't hasn't come under threat since WWII...is too damn obvious for an anti-gun liberal to grasp.

I guess the Glock did it.

A NYPD Detective accidentally shot herself in the thigh after dropping a prisoner off at Riker's Island. My guess is the finger on the trigger as the detective holstered her weapon was the culprit. Since the issue duty weapon for the NYPD is a Glock, I'm surprised they aren't blaming the gun.

From John Cox

We may be able to get our hands on...

...those Korean Garands after all. Senator Tester [D-MT] has proposed a possible solution.

He has has introduced the Collectible Firearms Protection Act and it would...
amend the Arms Export Control Act to provide that certain firearms
listed as curios or relics may be imported into the United States by
a licensed importer without obtaining authorization from the Department of State or the Department of Defense, and for other purposes.
Now all we need is a companion bill in the House, passage of both, and then a President that might actually sign it into law. We have a good chance on all but the last I think. Then again, with an election looming who knows what Obama might sign to buy votes.

North Carolina: House Bill 74

A second Castle Doctrine bill [HB 74] has been introduced in the North Carolina House. What makes it different from Senate Bill 34? It provides not only form protection in the home but in your vehicle as well. It also has a "stand your ground" provision. This bill has the endorsement of Grass Roots North Carolina. The text of the bill and additional information can be found at No Lawyers - Only Guns and Money. All the representatives involved in both bills have my respect, but HB 74 is the better. A State Representative in...

...Hawaii has proposed a law that would criminalize the sale of toy guns to minors. Sell a Nerf gun to a kid under 18 years old and get a $2000 fine and/or 90 days in jail. If my child uses their money to buy any toy I don't want them to have I take it away from them and they take the loss. I neither want nor need the government to regulate the matter or hold a store owner criminally libel for my potential parental failures. This bit of fuckwittery was brought to you by Democrat Scott K. Saiki. you guys in Hawaii seriously need to kick this twit to the curb because he apparently has way too much time on his hands as an elected official.

Looks like an utterly reasonable parental response to me. I'll file it away for later.

Happy Birthday

My youngest turned ten today. She, her mother, and older brother are down in Coco Beach, Florida celebrating the day with granddad. I stayed to work and take care of the Guinea Pigs, Lily and Gracie. We miss them badly.

And so it begins...

...again.

Senate Bill 34 has been introduced in the North Carolina Senate. It's the Castle Doctrine and would protect those using deadly force to protect their homes from civil and criminal liability. It's not the first attempt in North Carolina. Last year it passed the Senate but was held up in committee by an anti-gun representative in the House. Now that the Republicans hold majorities in the House and Senate, I think we may get a different outcome but don't get cocky. Call your representatives and let them know where you stand on this. The text of the bill can be found here.

One man's Constution is another man's toilet paper.

A Federal Judge in Florida has found Obama’s Health Care Law to be unconstitutional. My understanding is that although the judge did not issue an injunction ordering that implementation of the law be stopped, the decision itself serves the same purpose. The White House has said it will proceed with implementation regardless of the decision. The White House is ignoring a Federal Judge’s order because it doesn’t agree with it. So I guess that means President Obama and his toadies don’t consider themselves subject to the Judicial Branch [Senator Schumer, THAT would be the third branch of the Federal Government]. Not surprising. I get the feeling Obama doesn’t consider himself subject to much of anything. The only question left is what recourse is left to the rest of us?

Old School vs. No School

John Severin has a new comic out.

Mike Mignola and John Arcudi have written a new mini-series in the Hellboy world called Witchfinder. The art is by John Severin. Severin inked Dick Ayers pencils on what many, myself included, consider the best issues of Sgt Fury and the Howling Commandos. He also contributed to Blazing Combat, Warren's black and white war comic, and EC's Two Fisted Tales. He has done war comics, westerns, superheroes, sword and sorcery, and humor. At the age of 89, he is still producing work of a quality that puts other comic artists to shame. Dammed impressive. OK. I'm a fan. Take a look, and you will be too.

One more time...probably not.

An 18-year old in Las Vegas, Nevada gets arrested when he tells a school administrator that he forgot to take his rifle out of his car after target practice the night before. The charge is having a dangerous weapon on school property. He should have kept his mouth shut, left school early to take it home, and taken the hit for departing without permission. Couldn't be worse than this cluster foxtrot. Tell the truth. Get your future destroyed.

Yet another zero tolerance moment

In Virginia at Spotsylvania High School a fourteen year old was arrested for assault and expelled for blowing plastic pellets out of a metal tube. He was aiming at fellow students and admits he did so out of boredom. Technically an assault occurred but was expulsion the best or only way to deal with the incident? Local officials claim their zero tolerance policy left them with no choice. Others disagree. I say a policy that does not allow flexibility based on individual circumstances is a damn stupid policy intended more to protect bureaucrats from lawsuits than provide a secure learning environment.

Another Zero Tolerance moment...

...brought to you by the Hammonton Police, New Jersey Police and Hammonton Early Childhood Education Center. A seven year has been arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possessing an imitation firearm in or on an education institution because he brought a toy gun to school. The toy gun fired small soft balls. The boy fired it and the school officials turned him in. Whatever happened to calling the parents to discuss a problem child? We won't get to the question of whether playing with a toy gun or bringing it to scholl should be a crime. Rational people know the answer. Twits like those in the organizations noted above missed that test question.

Rumors...

There is a rumor that Carolyn McCarthy and that staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, Harry Reid, have managed to slip a amendment banning high capacity magazines onto the FAA Reauthorization bill. I've always thought he was an opportunistic prick and it's not like our side doesn't do the same kind of thing. They must know it has a snowball's chance of passage on its own. At this point there is no evidence that the rumor is true, but I wouldn't put it past them. In any event, contact your representatives and ask them to oppose a high capacity magazine ban in whatever form it comes to light in.

Liberty Meadows

I've added a link to the Liberty Meadows strip to the sidebar. I've always liked Frank Cho's work. It's all old material but good stuff. The strip was at one point syndicated, but Cho got tired of editors censoring his work and pulled it. If you like what you see the strips are collected in trade paperback and hardcover. You can see what else Cho is working on at the Liberty Meadows website.

Here's the original version of one of the censored strips. The rest are here here. Funny stuff.
