They are getting paid.

It's called a scholarship.
Appeals court rules that ban on pay for college athletes is illegal

This could be interesting...

...if only to see how badly Hollywood can screw up Heinlein again.
Heinlein's "Moon" To Be Adapted For TV
It's The Man Who Sold the Moon not The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Then again, the Spierig Brothers got it right with their adaptation of " '—All You Zombies—' ", but then, they aren't Hollywood.

High school teen who defended a blind classmate who was being beaten by a bully is SUSPENDED and kicked off football team
The lesson to our children being to not get involved and wait for the authorities to intervene. But what happens while they wait for the authorities? A blind kid continues to get the crap beat out of him.

Boehner Resigns

House Speaker John Boehner to resign at end of October
Yeah, but don't count on a conservative taking his place. It'll be another establishment dude with loyalty to the party and big money over their constituency. Hope I'm wrong. Won't be.

Trump on the Second Amendment

PROTECTING OUR SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN
Not bad but I want to know what the red line is on mental health records. Mine is an involuntary commitment approved by a judge. My major problem with Trump is I don't trust him and his talk is cheap.

A Win...

We conclude that the policy favoring the right of self-defense is a public policy of sufficient clarity and weight to qualify as an exception to the at-will employment doctrine.
So as I read it a Wal-Mart employee exercised h is right to self-defense while on Wal-Mart clock and they canned him for a policy violation. The Utah court says his right to self-defense trumps their right to employee whom they chose. I choose to see this as a good thing.

Win some...

Federal court strikes down some D.C. gun laws as unconstitutional

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 2-1 that the city cannot ban gun owners from registering more than one pistol per month or require owners to re-register a gun every three years. The court also invalidated requirements that owners make a personal appearance to register a gun and pass a test about firearms laws.

But the court upheld other parts of the law, such as requiring that so-called long guns -- including rifles and shotguns -- be registered along with handguns. The ruling also allows gun owners to be fingerprinted and photographed, pay certain fees and complete a firearms safety training course.

Kinda qualifies as a mixed blessing, but the lower courts seem to be against us lately and the Supremes don't to hear any gun cases. It may be the best we can hope for from the courts. So, we have to keep the pressure up on our Congresscritters to keep doing the right thing or make 'em pay.

Worth Sharing.

A politician playing politics?

No surprise there. It's all about getting reelected. Integrity and honesty are secondary to some politicos...well most.

Robert A. Heinlein: In Dialogue with His Century: Volume 1: Learning Curve 1907-1948 by William H. Patterson Jr.

I've been reading it off and on since it was published. That has nothing to do with the quality of the work. This is good. We get the unvarnished Heinlein. It's an enjoyable read.

Police Fire 84 Shots At Man And Miss 83 Times

That title kinda speaks for itself.

This from Mike Vanderboegh just because of the belly laugh.

Dead-eye Dicks. It's a good thing that "Black Lives Matter," otherwise they might have hit him.

Two "young gentlemen"* break into a house in Missouri...

...only to find an armed eleven year old and his four year old sister. The brother defends his sister by shooting one of the "young gentlemen"* in the head. The other flees. It ends with one sixteen year old dead and his friend on the run. The brother and his sister are fine. Oh, and the police's concern?
Fox2Now reported that police want to know why the children were home alone and why the 11-year-old had access to a gun. Police believe the mother bought the gun after prior break-in attempts.
Maybe their question should be what would have happened if the eleven-year old hadn't had access to the gun.

Ghost of Time by Steve White

I know White mostly from his collaborations with David Weber and assorted other authors. Can't say I've ever really gotten into his solo novels. I've tried but rarely finish them. That being said, I really liked this novel, and will probably give his older titles another chance.

San Andreas [2015]

My description of the plot is "have you ever had one of those days?" The special effects are as impressive as hell. The plot serves the special effects. The actors do the best they can with what they are given and in this case I'm OK with that. It's damn hard to compete with the effects here. Watch it. You will enjoy the ride.
