I'm reading...

...Killing Rommel by Steven Pressfield and Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove. I've read Gun of the South a couple of times before. It's my first time reading Killing Rommel. I keep jumping back and forth between the two. Couldn't tell you why. It's certainly not boredom with either title. They are both excellent books.

Only in Great Britain...

CONCERNED police officers swooped on a gift shop and seized 30 toy gun-shaped calculators amid fears they were 'dangerous' and could be used in a robbery.

Police: Man shot teens in self defense

In Pennsylvania, three 'teens' decided to rob a sixty-five year old man. The three 'teens' knocked him off his bicycle and two began to assault him. He pulled a handgun and shot two. One 'teen' is dead, another in the hospital, and the last in police custody. The victim, the sixty-five year old man, has not been charged. The news story makes it sound like the 'teens' were children. Sorry, when they decided to assault and rob the bicyclist they entered adulthood in what was for at least "16-year-old boy", a very final way.

No Excuse

Durham police: 4-year-old found gun, accidentally shot himself
The child's parents did not have his weapon properly secured. The child found it, handled it, and shot himself in the head. I pray the child recovers. The parents have no excuse.

2d Lt. Murphy commanded Company B, which was attacked by 6 tanks and waves of infantry. 2d Lt. Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to prepared positions in a woods, while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him, to his right, 1 of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn,... [more]

...and for those H. Beam Piper fans...

...his short story Time And Time Again adapted into a radio play for Dimension X.

Dimension X: Destination Moon

One of my favorite films is George Pal's Destination Moon primarily because of Robert Heinlein's involvement in the production. Apparently there was a radio play based on the film. I learned about it at Heinleinblog by way of Alphecca, but his links were dead. I found these elsewhere.

Starbucks Appreciation Day

The National Gun Victims Action Council has announced a boycott of Starbucks starting Valentines Day 2012. Sebastian has suggested a Starbucks Appreciation Day for that same date. I really don't like to spend money on overpriced coffee but this seems a worthy cause [thumbing your nose at the antis] and Starbucks sells overpriced hot chocolate too. I can't stand coffee. Hot Chocolate I'll drink. Also send Starbucks an email thanking them for staying neutral on the issue of gun control.

I'd blame it on Bloomberg but there's not a Federal, State, or, Municipal law enforcement agency in the country that won't jump right on this and call it officer safety.

The M1 Carbines are a definite no, but we'll get the Garands if doing so will help Obama get re-elected. Otherwise, no.

Attack the Block

I watched Attack the Block this evening. It's a British flick about what happens when a local gang of semi-thugs confront aliens invading their apartment building in South London. If you can get by the accents you get a funny film with a fair amount of actions. I enjoyed it, but I kept wanting Michael Caine to show up with a pistol and tell the human villain "you have failed to maintain your weapon."

6 Police Officers Shot in Utah, 1 Dead, 5 Injured

ABC reports the rest of the story with their usual attention to detail and journalistic integity. One example was the video on the evening news did its best to confuse an automatic rifle [M$/M16 variant] with a semi-automatic rifle [AK variant] and so the viewer who might not have a clue. It's not really surprising. The purpose here is to push an agenda not report the facts and that's business as usual at ABC News.
