I can't say I've ever been impressed by almost anything White has written that he didn't have a co-writer on. It's readable and it's okay.

Into the Dark by J. A. Sutherland

Seems like a very good combination of David Drake and David Weber. A female Horatio Hornblower in space. I liked it a lot and will pick of the others in the series. Recommended.
