Federal Court: Parents in Maryland School District Cannot Opt K-5 Children Out of LGBTQ Curriculum

A victory of sorts

It's the right kind of victory for the Romeike Family. Homeland Security has granted them indefinite deferred status. So they get to stay here in the United States. That's a blessing. It's not a victory for the rest of us since the Supreme Court refused to review their case. That denial lets stand the DOJ's argument that a a parent has no fundamental right to determine the education of their children. What hens when they start applying that position to domestic cases?

...perfectly acceptable, because that's the only way you're going to get many parents to subject their children to the so called education offered in the public schools.

And yes, I'm a home schooler. If anyone is gonna indoctrinate my kids, its gonna be me.

Intolerance is Tolerance

I seem to recall that our forefathers came to these shores to escape religious intolerance. Now we have an Attorney General that defines that same intolerance as tolerance. That's pretty messed up. How long before he tries to apply the same definitions to American home schoolers?

“Attorney General Holder is trying to seek dismissal of this case because he believes that targeting specific groups in the name of tolerance is within the normal legitimate functions of government,” said Michael Farris, chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association. “This cannot be the ultimate position of the United States without denying the essence of our commitment to liberty.”

I'd have thought more members of Congress might have given them support, but then they're only Christian homeschoolers. Maybe they should have entered the country over the southern border instead of legally to seeking asylum to escape persecution.

So how long before this reasoning...

...is applied to domestic home schoolers?

The ruling essentially states that “the Romeikes [have] not shown that Germany’s enforcement of its general school-attendance law amounts to persecution against them, whether on grounds of religion or membership in a recognized social group.”

The compulsory attendance laws — and related punishments if violated — apply to everyone, and therefore this isn’t a case of persecution, they say.

AND our government is giving what amounts to amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants from south of the border but it won't allow one family from Germany to stay here to avoid religious persecution. Land of the free huh?

Not all threats to our liberties are direct.

I remember reading somewhere about a family of German Christians that had chosen to home school their children to essentially keep them from the indoctrination of the German public schools. The German courts came down on them hard. I hadn't realized the Romeikes had fled Germany for the United States and were granted asylum. The Holder Justice Department is trying to sent them back because in his view and that of the current administration they don't have the right to educate their children as they see fit. The case is currently before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Won't effect us here in the United States you might say?

Really?

What makes you think that Obama's Department of Education won't take a win on this case to heart and use it to good effect on local home school movement?

The United States Supreme Court has made it very clear in the past that religious freedom is an individual right. Yet our current government does not seem to understand this. They only think of us as members of groups and factions. It is an extreme form of identity politics that directly threatens any understanding of individual liberty.

This is as much a threat on our individual liberties as Obama's current assault on the Second Amendment.
