William Taft dies during his 1912 re-election campaign and Theodore Roosevelt is able to take the election. That's the set up for this alternative history of World War 1. Four years later the United States is a near totalitarian state with Roosevelt in charge and the war looming. It's not a United States I'd want to live in but it makes a good backdrop for the story of a female Black Chamber operative's mission to prevent a plot by the German High Command to halt the United States' entry into the war. It is a damn good read. I've started to get bored by Stirling's Amberverse books. This suffers none of that. It's a good hard ride to its conclusion. Highly Recommended.
