During Monday's annual State of the City address, Durham Mayor Bill Bell called on lawmakers to pass tougher gun laws.Durham already has a city ordinance that prohibits discharging a firearm within the city limits for all the good it does. Making it a State law won't do any more to reduce gun crime than the local ordinance. What Bill Bell sees as crime fighting the rest of us recognize for what it is: gun control. Maybe what he should do is give the local police the tools they need to do their jobs.Bell told city officials he wanted to work with the city's attorney and the General Assembly to pass a law cracking down on people who illegally fire guns within city limits.
