You should go to a vet and have his kidney functions evaluated. We had a long haired piebald cat that had a fetish for water. He died at four of acute renal failure. While not common, the vet said that this is well known illness in long haired cats.
I hadn't checked the cat's water bowl that day. She was thirsty. Filling it solved the problem.
