I read this several years back. It's fine the second time around. 1901 is a nice little alternate history of what happens when the Kaiser invades New York. I think this was his first novel and it established his standard formula. Said formula will be obvious, when you read the book. The formula works for the most part, and I do recommend the novel.

The officer fired at the autistic man three times with his rifle and MISSED hitting the therapist instead. This despite the therapist telling the officers what the true situation was. OK. Give the officer the benefit of a doubt you still have a case of legal but negligent. The officer took a chance on a shot with the therapist in the line of fire and came up snake eyes. Clearly not an accident. Sucks to be him.

The ban is effective immediately.

Rule of law is dead anywhere a politician can arbitrarily rewrite a law to mean what they want it to mean. Rule of law is dead in Massachusetts.

The general plot is cop recruited into super secret organization and has to stop outbreak of zombie plague. Very well done. I will be reading more by Maberry.

During a subsequent press conference, Diamond Reynolds—Castile's girlfriend—insisted that he had done nothing wrong. And she's right. They were stopped because their car had a broken tail light. That's it.

In Minnesota, citizens are allowed to carry firearms if they have a permit to do so. Castile was merely exercising his Second Amendment rights. His decision to inform the officer about his weapon was courteous, but not legally required. Permit holders in Minnesota do not need to tell cops that they are carrying firearms unless specifically asked.

It seems fairly clearly, then, that Castile is in some sense a Second Amendment martyr: He was killed by a police officer because he was exercising his rights. We know, of course, that these kinds of things are more likely to happen to black Americans, regardless of whether they were doing anything wrong.

My agreement here is with the understanding that the facts as reported are indeed the facts. Too often, this early in the investigation, they are not, and people's agendas run amok.

An adjunct professor at Southern State Community College (SSCC) in Ohio is under investigation for threatening to shoot up the NRA.

“Look, there’s only one solution. A bunch of us anti-gun types are going to have to arm ourselves, storm the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, VA, and make sure there are no survivors,” James Pearce wrote in a Facebook post on June 13. “This action might also require coordinated hits at remote sites, like Washington lobbyists. Then and only then will we see some legislative action on assault weapons. Have a nice day.”

Never having been to the NRA Headquarters I have no idea how that might work out for him. I suspect badly.

Both too short. OK, I enjoyed both. Cairo is an Axis of story that Birmingham is doling out one novella at a time. It's good stuff and I wish he'd just get the hell off the pot and finish it. Monsters is a taste of an alternative history I'd love to read. Again. stop teasing us John, and get to it.

The Legend of Caleb York by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins.

Once upon a time Mickey Spillance wrote a screenplay for a western that was never produced. I don't read westerns. I've just never really cared for them. I do like to watch them. The source of this novel is pretty clear. It has all of the Hollywood Western tropes and, like Collins says, you can plug the actors of your choice into the roles. It was fun. I liked it, and may pick up the sequel. We'll see.

My oldest daughter is a fan of Wen Spencer as am I. Unlike me, she is willing to spend $15 for the Baen eARC. I'm cheap. What can I say? Still she had mercy on me and gave me a copy. It was worth every penny she paid. The book contains some old material but more than enough new to make it worth the cost. AND it's damn good. Portions had me laughing my ass off. Spencer does everything well. I've not read one of her books I haven't enjoyed. So, this is highly recommended. Spend the extra money. Buy the eARC.
