What part of "shall not be infringed" do they not understand. Actually, I think they understand perfectly well. They are just in a campaign to obfuscate and nullify the the Second Amendment, which is their real goal, and for many liberals it is their outwardly stated goal.
Peruta v. San Diego will ultimately end up in the Supreme Court. Let us hope that Trump is able to be the one to replace Justice Scalia.
